Susazon comes to Patzcuaro!

If you don't know about it , then let me be the bearer of good news. That's good news only if you eat meat!

Susazon is a distributor of premium meat in Mexico. They have outlets all over the country and for some unexplainable reason they opened up a shop in Patzcauro. We have been purchasing stuff in the Morelia store for years....special occasions or guests that gotta have good meat!

If you are looking for a better than average hunk of meat, something that resembles a New York steak or Rib Eye then you should be happy.

They are located on the street that is on the south side of the big plaza directly behind Campania restaruant ( maybe the restaruant will use their beef, one can hope) the shop is small but sufficient to carry pretty much anything you may want. The street goes up the hill towards the college.

Now this would have been a real find for me years ago when I would consume my weight in rare beef , but nowadays it's a once or twice a month treat to toss a nice steak on the grill, put some nice char on it and whisk it off after a few minutes on each side.

The only down side is that the stuff is frozen, so for true meat aficionados the cell structure has changed a little. Hey, you can't have it both ways...... It's either medium or medium rare.......
Or rare.

Their prices are higher than lets say Carneceria Northenia but the taste is noticeable and you don't have to wallow around the mercado.....

So I hope there will be sufficient business to have them keep the doors open.....

Try a steak, you might enjoy it.
Or maybe not........

I have not had difficulty finding the cuts I want in Mexico, just the fact that they do not age the beef long enough before freezing it (yuk) We have been know to haul down a full prime rib when we drive SOB. Is the Susazon comparable to USDA Prime?

Prediction: That place will go belly up in nothing flat. Pátzcuaro is too provincial.

Dream on.... Unfortunately they only carry choice. The Angus they do carry has pretty decent marbling and their arrachera is very good also. Prime is very hard to get even NOB, at a wholesaler a few months ago, I paid about 7 a lb for a whole primal rib roast, which was about 16 lbs. When available the prime goes for about $20... So the dinner guests better appreciate the difference. Maybe one day I'll spring for one.....

Felipe, I think I will have to agree with you...
So, at least we have the Morelia store thats been there for years.....

Tancho,

It appears that you like your steak just like I do...just knock the horns off, drag it in, and kick the moo out of it. The only thing that you have to be careful about is that the blood trickling sown your chin doesn't stain your shirt. Happy Halloween :)

I saw the new SuSazon Store about a week ago. The manager of La Surtidora is involved in the operation.

I priced a single ribeye steak and it was $250. Whoopee!

When I want better beef, I will shop at Costco, although Ms Rose of Morelia advised me that she has had excellent meats from the carnicería inside Mega, next to Costco.

In Pátzcuaro, my regular butcher is La Sin Rival, on Ibarra, near Espejo. I have had less success with La Norteña but it's o.k. for soup meat and such. But even La Sin Rival cannot provide tender juicy steaks, NOB style.

Don Cuevas

Yes Bob, nice rare steak, some nice blood pressure seasoning on it, nothing better!

Sr. Cuevas...250 pesos for a steak, better be real good. At that price Felipe is right, it's demise is a sure thing.
I'll have to try your La Sin Rival, next time I buy a steak or two...
Costco is good, but lots of times I just want one steak...
I'll take a look at the Mega.

No loco cow disease? I remember several food items that were excellent during my last trip.
The butter and ground meat. The hamburgers at a street vendor where exceptional people were lined up in cue,I enjoyed a regular for about 75 cents, other had these double decker things for a buck and a half, way too much goodness.

Jerry,
Yes the butter is great, so is the bread and eggs. Lots of stuff is way better than NOB.
And we are all exceptional people when we line up at taco stands too.

"But even La Sin Rival cannot provide tender juicy steaks, NOB style.", I wrote earlier.

Go there for ground beef, cecina, chorizo, and cuts for braising or simmering. We did recently had some excellent beef liver, well trimmed and sliced very thinly. I cooked it quickly and served it with lots of semicaramelized onions and some good bacon.

They will grind beef and pork to order, but you'll need to make very clear what you want.
They also sharpen knives, an overnight service, but it doesn't come cheaply.

You can sample the good hamburgers next door, at Cafetería Chio's, run by the butcher's wife.

Don Cuevas

Sr Cuevas, I will try your place our next need for some beef, planning a October beef stew next week probably...
I am familiar with the burgers next door. They are good, but only the single ones, the doubles which I tried once, where way too overload to enjoy.... a fault with Mexican's attempts at making good burgers....

Well, I purchased 4 rib eye Angus steaks today since we have some friends coming over for dinner. I'll let you know if they were worth the investment.......
I asked for New York cut, both people at the store, never heard of that type of cut....so I would think they are just a glorified cash register operator and freezer door opener supervisor manning the place....

Sounds like glorified is being kind.

****STEAK REPORT*****

I purchased 4 rib eye steaks and tossed them on the grill. Three were cooked medium rare, one was requested well done.....
The medium rare ones were juicy, had great marbling and were worth the extra money for having a special dinner. We usually only have steak once or twice a month, so based on the special occasion of having dinner guests, it was worth the price. I will purchase steaks from them again. They also had hamburger, which I may try next time I am on that street.....
