Sadly our first case

I was just informed that we have had one person die in Patzcuaro.

This was the first confirmed death in the area. Sadly the young man was only 24 year of age and you would think that he would have a strong immune system, but one never knows when it becomes your time.

Schools in Patzcuaro and the rest of the country are closed until further notice.
All public function are likewise suspended.

People and automobile traffic is way down in the normal parts of town.

The US government is considering advising residents not to travel into Mexico.

We will wait and see, meanwhile loading up on vitamin C......

Makes you want to stay home and wash your hands all the time....I guess now would be a great time to sit down the kids and discuss how viruses spread....

This morning we cancelled our Mexico City plans, changing our flight to the U.S. to Morelia. It cost us a bit more, but we consider it worth it. Thus we have two extra days at home to rest and get ready.

While in Patzcuaro yesterday it was very busy. We bought cubrebocas (masks) and hand sanitizer towelettes. Today back again, masks were out of stock at the same farmacia, although they said they'd have more this evening. Also picked up a couple of masks at Ferretería VidrioEléctrica.
Town was much quieter today.

I'd read a news story on MiMorelia.com.mx that the Pátzcuaro death was suspected but not yet proven to have been from swine flu.

Back again tomorrow (!) for the Men's Breakfast and a fax errand. I'm seriously wearing my mask, except while eating. Those expat men like to shake hands. Always wash hands thoroughly before eating, no matter where or when.

Saludos,
Don Cuevas

I am glad that you were able to change your plans, this is not something to be lax about. I for one have been pretty lax with the hand washing while outside the house, shopping carts, doors, money, etc, etc, etc.
It would be stupid that for being lax one would pick up the bug, since prevention is easy, just need to get into the routine.....
Have a safe trip!

Hola to All from Ciudad Nueva York!
I am very sad to hear of the losses throughout Mexico. My deepest regrets to all who have suffered a loss. Yes, handwashing is certainly important.
In addition, the Centers for Disease Control and the Journal of the American Medical Assn. have both reported significant improvement in immune function for those who get at least 8 hours of sleep each night.
So, wash, eat right, and get plently of rest.
Viva Mexico!
